Home Safety Checklist

Make your family safer, step-by-step

Sound the Alarm: Install smoke detectors on every floor of your home and carbon monoxide detectors near sleeping areas. If already installed, test them! Tip: Replace the batteries every daylight-saving time change.

Avoid Overload: Check for overloaded extension cords – usage should not exceed the recommended wattage.
Don’t Get Tippy: If young children are in the home, bookshelves and other furniture should be firmly secured with wall brackets to prevent tipping.

Providing Security With An Intruder Security Alarm

In the past , home security alarms were only found with affluent homes . These days however , the costs have dropped and they are becoming more common with households of average folk . A lot of people who purchase burglar systems go for the do it yourself systems . They can be wired or wireless , activating an alarm when an intruder attempts to break in or when they are moving around inside of your home .

With home burglar alarms , there are two types - open and closed circuit . Open circuit devices work by setting off an alarm when the circuit closes . When a window or a door is opened , the circuit is instantly completed and the alarm is triggered . Closed circuit systems work the opposite way . When a window or door is opened , the circuit is broken - also activating the alarm .

Another , high end option , are motion sensors . Motion sensors detect ny sort of motion within a certain radius to the sensor . Once it has sensed any motion , it sends a signal out to the control panel that will evaluate it and see if the movement is taken into account suspicious . If the movement is indeed regarded suspicious , it will react to the way you have it set up and inform the proper authorities or sound the burglar alarm .

Motion sensors can also be adjusted as well . You can adjust them for things such as pets strolling around or any other activity that is common with your home that wouldn’t signify a crime taking place . Motion sensor alerts are very common these days , and one of the most effective ways to keep your home safe from a burglar - and provide you with peace of mind in knowing that you are protected .

Usually , it’s a good idea to use motion sensors and magnetic switches with your burglar alarm put in place . Magnetic switches will protect doors and windows while the motion detectors will help to protect larger rooms , such as living rooms and hallways . The combination of the two is never a poor idea - and will go a long way in protecting your home .

Another available option that you have is a security and safety camera . Video cameras are also common these days , and can be mounted in very strategic areas throughout the parameter of your property . They will pick up images in the area they are mounted , which will be displayed on the monitor . You can also record the video to a videotape as well , making it a suitable choice for anyone who wants to keep track of the information that the camera picks up .

You can also get a burglar system from a home security company as well . Many companies monitor their systems remotely , and always have someone in the office to look after the system . Once the alarm is set off , the service provider will immediately inform the local police or send their own protection personnel out to your home . This way , night or day , no matter where you go , your home will always be protected .

Investing in a burglary system of any type is invariably a smart investment . You have several different to choose from , depending on your needs . If you’ve been worried about your home and the things you keep inside the house , you should invest in a burglary system . They will help you keep peace of mind , and know that you are protected . They don’t cost you that much either , which makes them an even better investment . If you own a home - you shouldn’t think twice to invest in a burglary system .

Qualities of a Good Security Company

Security is of paramount importance to most home and business owners. The thought of being broken into often makes one feel sick. It's not so much the loss of the items (and often thieves do not even take a large amount of valuables); it's the feeling of being violated by someone breaking in where they shouldn't be. In order to prevent burglaries and break-ins, virtually all business owners and many homeowners use a security system. The type of security system used will depend on the needs of the building, the size of the city and other factors. There are a few things to look for when choosing a security system, either for your home or business.

Interface with Local Law Enforcement

The first matter to consider is how the alarm system interfaces with the local police department and the alarm company itself. If the alarm is triggered, the ideal situation is for the home or business owner to be alerted remotely, followed by a signal to the police if the alarm is not overridden within a certain, specified amount of time. This ensures that the alarm is not simply a loud noise, but that it backs up its piercing bark with law enforcement bite. If the alarm is triggered by a non-threat, how will the alarm company handle the situation? Will you be reimbursed for a police visit in a non-emergency?

Interface with Alarm Company

Secondly, consider the location of the company in relation to your home or business. If the company is not locally-based, and there is a technical problem with the system, the logistics of organizing for the system to be fixed become difficult. Much more ideal is to buy an alarm system from a company actually based in your city. Obviously, this is impossible if you live a small town, but residents of larger cities such as Phoenix or Sacramento should use locally-based alarm companies.

Credible Service

Another thing a Las Vegas alarm company should provide is a list of references. This is includes people who have used the service in the past, or who are currently using the service. By calling these people, you can determine whether the company is who they say they are, and get a far better feel for the credibility of the company besides their own assertions.

Home Alarm Security System - 4 Devices To Look For To Reduce Your Installation Cost
By Alfred P

If your home is prewired for a home alarm system, you will want to do an inventory of the devices installed. This will make your meeting with your security consultant more productive. During the check, you want to find out what devices are installed and how many there are. You will be looking for your keypad, alarm panel, door and window contacts, motion detectors and smoke detectors.

Keypad

Looking for your keypad is quite easy. Typically your keypad is located close to one of the entrances. Look at the hall way leading to the garage door and around the front door. The keypad will have numbers on it, similar to the same layout as your phone. Look for words like, arm, off, away, stay, police, fire and medical.

You also want to see if there is a flip cover. look inside the flip cover, there might be information about the system on it. Write down all the information you find on and around the keypad. This will help the security consultant determine what type of system it is.

Alarm panel

Your alarm panel is the heart of your alarm system. All the wires from the devices installed will run back to the alarm panel. Most alarm panels in prewired homes are installed with other low voltage panels, such as your cable and phone boxes.

They are usually located in the master bedroom closet. Other places to look are closets in the hallway and in the garage. This panel is different than your electrical panel. It does not have circuit breakers inside. What you will see inside is a circuit board with wires running to it.

Door and window contacts

When your home was prewired, the contractor added contacts and magnets to the doors and some windows. You will find your prewired contacts and magnets inside the door and window frames. You should also look at the doors and windows themselves. You should see a round stud on the frame and the door or window. These are your magnets and contacts. At a minimum, all your doors should have contacts on them.
