Home Alarm Security System - 4 Devices To Look For To Reduce Your Installation Cost
By Alfred P

If your home is prewired for a home alarm system, you will want to do an inventory of the devices installed. This will make your meeting with your security consultant more productive. During the check, you want to find out what devices are installed and how many there are. You will be looking for your keypad, alarm panel, door and window contacts, motion detectors and smoke detectors.

Keypad

Looking for your keypad is quite easy. Typically your keypad is located close to one of the entrances. Look at the hall way leading to the garage door and around the front door. The keypad will have numbers on it, similar to the same layout as your phone. Look for words like, arm, off, away, stay, police, fire and medical.

You also want to see if there is a flip cover. look inside the flip cover, there might be information about the system on it. Write down all the information you find on and around the keypad. This will help the security consultant determine what type of system it is.

Alarm panel

Your alarm panel is the heart of your alarm system. All the wires from the devices installed will run back to the alarm panel. Most alarm panels in prewired homes are installed with other low voltage panels, such as your cable and phone boxes.

They are usually located in the master bedroom closet. Other places to look are closets in the hallway and in the garage. This panel is different than your electrical panel. It does not have circuit breakers inside. What you will see inside is a circuit board with wires running to it.

Door and window contacts

When your home was prewired, the contractor added contacts and magnets to the doors and some windows. You will find your prewired contacts and magnets inside the door and window frames. You should also look at the doors and windows themselves. You should see a round stud on the frame and the door or window. These are your magnets and contacts. At a minimum, all your doors should have contacts on them.

  1. I used to be an alarm install technician. And while I know nothing about industry lobbying, I do know that almost all consumer model alarm systems have a verification system. When the alarm goes off, the monitoring company calls your home and can listen in on the panel. They ask you your secret pass-phrase and/or verify your identity. If there is nothing or no noise, then the police are called.
And, motion sensors are pet-friendly and can distinguish between your dog and a person pretty easily- unless your dog weighs over 100 pounds.
